Pirate battle in Omiš

Omis Pirates

In the last six years, a unique event re-enacting the original Pirate battle that occurred in the 13th century is held in the Omiš harbour. This reconstruction shows a battle between the Venetians, led by the fleet commander Acconcio, with the Omiš pirates, led by their ruler Malduk.

Omiš pirates won after a fierce battle and ordered the Venetians to pay them a fee in gold coins for safe passage through the Brač channel, because that area under Omiš rule is “Mare nostrum,” Croatian Sea.

Rreconstruction of the battle are happening in the mid of August, with around one hundred armed participants on several pirate and Venetian galleons and sagittas, i.e. fast Omiš pirate ships.

Omis

In this way the city of Omiš is based on historic facts and is able to position itself on the tourist map as a city of pirates.
